Sorry for the delay in my thoughts on the whole speed dating thing. Most of you know I signed up for an event with a couple friends in Roanoke. We had no clue what to expect, but it's a good concept and I've been curious about it for some time now.
Turned out there were only 7 women and 5 guys in attendance on Thursday. A little disappointing because you don't meet as many people. I think a full event has 24 people. Every woman has a table that's hers all night. The guys start at a table and rotate every 5 or so minutes. Our 'dates' were 8 minutes. I was most worried about being able to carry on these 5 min conversations without awkwardness, and worried I'd run out of questions. In actuality 8 min is barely long enough to find out where someone lives, what they do, and a little about hobbies. All the conversations were good, no crazy stories there. At the end of the night you fill out a card with all the guys names and circle 'interested in talking', 'interested in talking work', or nothing. So basically, I'll go on a date with you, we could be friends, or not interested. If any of your picks circle the same thing for you, you match. You're sent an email with all your matches the next day. It's up to you to make contact from there.
I still think it's a great concept. I'm sure it's hit or miss depending on the people that sign up every month. Roanoke's not the hotbed for young outgoing singles so the events might be more successful in a bigger city. Or with more advertising. I mean 6 or the 7 women were from Blacskburg. A drawnback was the cost. $32 is a little steep. I'm still wondering what all that money went towards, we didn't get cocktails or anything. Since the women at this event met less then 6 guys we'll get a free event. That made paying the $32 not so bad :)
I'll do it again (my free one at least), and wouldn't disuade others from trying it out. Going with friends definitely added to the fun. Of course I'm still skeptical I'd meet 'the one' there, but it was fun :)
