Camping & White Water Rafting

~ Thanks R for inviting us on your white water adventure.
~ 6 people, 1 minivan, 1 tent, 1 raft - great bonding trip!
~ M locked his keys in his car while picking up A (with all their stuff) - opps :)
~ M&M had a miscommunication which resulted in 5 sleeping bags for 6 people - opps :)
~ Way to go M&J getting a fire started in a wet pit with wet wood!
~ When a random person (older gentleman) jumps into telling a joke, why do we fear it will be something sexual/crude? (we were correct - it was sexual - but cute)
~ Fayetteville is a cute little town, I'll have to venture there when more then just the coffee shop is open.
~ FYI - Water levels on the New River are dangerous below 0 and above 6 - luckily for us the level was around 5 and decending - still made for an intense day.

~ A great raft trip can't happen without a great guide... thanks Bill Tanger!
~ We spent some time practicing 'high side' during the flat water. We left one person to try 'high siding' while the other 6 of us tried to flip the raft. Result - that one person goes flying!! Remember when you were 4 and your dad threw you accross the pool?? Yeah, this was just as much fun!!
~ Of course we did the obligitory jump rock. Coolest part was all the butterflys on the rock.
~ Per our guides request, we all swam 'swimmers'. At lower water levels it is a much friendlier swim. Yesterday it was a decent length wave train with dips of at least 3-4 feet. Fun and a bit scary... did I say FUN! :) Good practice in case you actually do swim and need breathe while bouncing thru waves.

~ I've been rafting quite a bit and tend to concentrate on my paddling so much I'm looking down at the water instead of up ahead and enjoying the ride. Yesterday I made sure to keep my head up, what a different experience! Most of the rapids on the new are just plain fun!!
~ Since our guide rocked, we took a detour right before 'Miller's Folly' to hike a waterfall. Eating our fill of red raspberries on the way up :) We crossed railroad tracks to find a beautiful waterfall. The sun was shining through the trees on four different tiers of the waterfall. It ranks up there as one of my favorites. We climbed up and stood under the second tier. COLD!! A train came by, so we headed back to the river by way of the tunnel. Hard to explain, but it was a cool experience and will forever seperate this trip from others!
~ We had the chance to swim one more rapid at the end of the day. 'Thread the needle' (btw - M did a great job of taking the raft through this by her lonesome!) We were supposed to stay spaced out, but R is slow so I kinda ran him over, sorry R! You kick off one rock and go to the right.. the kick off the next rock to the left. Hoping to get caught in some hydrolics that will pull you down 6 inches and spin ya. Well I got caught in a couple hydrolics but flip out to much to let it spin me... I kick back to the top in semi-panic mode :) We laughed the whole way through it!

~ It never ceases to amaze me the power of water. Swimming through the rapids you can feel it under the surface pulling at you in different directions... crazy!
~ We only had one unexpected swimmer yesterday, but I for sure got the most beat up I can remember on a rafting trip. No blood, but plenty of bruises!!
~ The New River Gorge Bridge is pretty darn amazing! Especially from below!
~ A white water trip in WV just isn't complete without dinner at Dirty Ernie's Rib Pit!

Garden

This summer is my first real attempt at growing my own vegetables. I choose a bunch of things just to see how it went and start learning. Before pics, taken at the end of May

Since I haven't decided what to do in the front were I took out a bunch of bushes, I thought why not use the space for vegetables this year. We planted watermelon, jalapenos, okra, cucumbers, squash, zucchini, and eggplant.

Out back T and M helped me build and place the first of a couple raised beds which will be the official vegetable garden when it's all complete. I planted tomatoes and pumpkins back here.

Most of the plants are growing like crazy. The tomatoes, cukes, squash and zucchini are out of control! Everything else is doing ok... we'll see if they produce much fruit.

Picture of the front garden taken this morning.

zucchini ready to be picked.

Jalapenos.

Blooms on the pumpkin plant look promising.

I think these are better boy tomatoes.

Grape tomatoes, there's at least 100 green grape tomatoes, can't wait til they turn!!

So far the vegetable garden thing is going well. I'm sure before long we'll have more then we can eat.... let me know what you'd like me to share.

Do you know the answer??

What's the fastest-growing high school varsity sport?

I'll post the answer tomorrow.
(try to guess the old fashioned way... without using google!)

Life Ain't Always Beautiful

This song has been on my mind lots lately....

Life ain't always beautiful
Sometimes it's just plain hard
Life can knock you down, it can break your heart

Life ain't always beautiful
You think you're on your way
And it's just a dead end road at the end of the day

But the struggle makes you stronger
And the changes make you wise
And happiness has it's own way of takin' it sweet time

[chorus]
No,life aint always beautiful
Tears will fall sometimes
Life aint always beautiful
But it's a beautiful ride

Life aint always beautiful
Some days I miss your smile
I get tired of walkin' all these lonely miles

And I wish for just one minute
I could see your pretty face
Guess I can dream, but life dont work that way

But the struggles makes me stronger
And the changes make me wise
And happiness has it's own way of takin' its sweet time

No, life aint always beautiful
But I know I'll be fine
Hey, life aint always beautiful
But its a beautiful ride
What a beautiful ride

I guess this is a dedication to all my friends going through hard times... you're in my thoughts.

Slow - Turn - Press - Roll

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation and Virgina Community College System have teamed up to offer the Basic Rider Safety Course.

I've wanted a motorcycle for who knows how long. With very little time ever being on one (and most of that time being on the back)... A - I'm a little scared of them & clueless to how to work one and B - wondered if I would even enjoy being in control of one. I heard about this class a couple years ago and knew it was a good fit for me. I didn't need to have a bike or helmet, I'd be taught starting with basics, and it'd be a beginner friendly environment. Only problem is everyone else wants to take the class also. I was finally with it enough to sign up the day classes opened for summer session.

I wasn't disappointed. The instructors were great. Informative, Patient, Encouraging. I enjoyed being eased into riding - quickly gained my confidence and was ready for speed :) When I learn something new I really like to be taught all about it. It's nice having a broad base of knowledge for the basics. And also nice to have someone correcting your mistakes to ensure you learn properly. I was able to ask stupid questions - and learn from other classmates' stupid questions.

I rode a Susuki GZ250, not sure the year. It wasn't a Harley, but it was nice. I've now got T-CLOCS, FINE-C, and slow-turn-press-roll imprinted in my brain forever. We worked a lot on switching gears and turning. Some drills were more fun then others - like weaving in the cones :)

It was sad for the class to come to an end knowing I wouldn't be on a bike again anytime soon. I had fun and learned a lot. I would definitely feel comfortable getting on a bike and going now. I even hope all the turning techniques will help me out road cycling. And.... I passed the Celebration of Knowledge and Celebration of Skills - which make me legal. My license shows Class: M!

If you've ever thought about riding - I def sign up for the course!

The Way I See It #113

Music is the voice of your soul. I love how even just one moment of a song can grab you from the inside and then slowly... in its own time...release you.
