In attempting to keep myself in shape for next months Rock N Roll San Jose - I'll be accompanying V during her speed workouts for the next couple weeks. Sounds painful - but it's actually nice to change things up a bit - and it feels good to run fast. We met at the office at 6am and jogged down to the VT track in the dark! Today's assignment 8X400's.
It's difficult to pace yourself and then increase by only 2 seconds everytime. The morning was perfect, great weather, felt good running, good company. Morning is by far my favorite time of day and favorite time to work out!
Next Week:
Half Mile Repeats
55+/- min.
15 min. warm-up
4 x 800 @ 3:35 (1:47 per 400 or 7:10 pace)
with 2 min. easy recovery jog following each repeat, then,
2 x 200m @ 45 sec. or faster! 200m recovery jog
5+/- min. cool-down
Sounds scary!! I don't know if I can sprint an 800 - we'll see! I might just stick to the 8x400's :)

2006 Mud Run

V and I ventured up to Roanoke on Sat for the Marine Corps Mud Run. I ran it 5 years ago and had fun, but ever since it's fallen on a home football game weekend... I was excited to run it again, and this time with a friend. I 'thought' I had remembered the course, and I had the basics - but there was a lot more trail running then I remember and I killer hill!! I thought it was a good idea to start out fast with V and get ahead of the crowd, knowing I could catch my breath wading through the river - well this was a good idea until we blew past a high school cross country team!! What was I thinking? The race was fun!! I walked up mtn trail through the forest, but otherwise kept a decent pace. This might make my annual list. The marines do a great job running the event, the atmosphere is super fun with lots of families and friends out there to have fun, it's just a great Sat morning :)

V's daughter ran in the POLLYWOG JOG, her first race. She was pretty excited about it until we came out of the mud pit... then she was saying 'I don't want to get dirty'. V was able to get her pumped back up before race time. The kids had soooo much fun - the older girls (12 years old?) were getting stuck in the mud and just laughing..... it was great to watch.

1. The first Hokie Bird costume, known then as the Gobbler, was designed in 1960 and cost $200 -- $180 of it was raised from civilian VT students and the Student Body Senate paid the rest.
2. The Hokie Bird (then Gobbler) was first presented at the last game of the 1962 football season -- on Thanksgiving Day.
3. The first Hokie Bird’s tail feathers were real turkey feathers dyed orange and maroon. People often tried to steal them for keepsakes during games, so they were occasionally replaced with orange and maroon crepe paper.
4. The long-necked Hokie Bird was designed to look more like a turkey, or gobbler, but was changed by Bill Dooley, athletic director in the late 1970s, when he heard that the nickname, “The Gobbler” came from the way the cadets were said to have “gobbled” their food.
5. Today’s well-known Hokie Bird was introduced at the 1987 season-opener when he arrived at the game in a white limousine accompanied by two men dressed as secret service agents.

1. More than 200 vendors, 200 ushers,150 police officers and 40 rescue workers work each home football game.
2. Tech police average nine arrests at each evening game. At last years night game against Maryland more than 50 arrests were made. Arrests range from fraudulent tickets to Drunk in public.
3. On average the stadium holds 7 ambulances, resuce workers treat 40 patients and 7 patients are taken to the hospital. Patients are treated for anything from diabetes to alcohol poisoning.
4. It takes around 150 Virginia Tech students to clean Lane Stadium after each home game. Members of Tech’s Corp of Cadets participate in stadium clean-up after every game.
5. For nationaly televised games up to nine cameras are on Whorsham Field: two in the South End Zone, one in the North End Zone, three in the West Stands (one on the 50 yard line and one on each 30 yard line) and three on the sidelines (one stationary, one handheld and one on a rolling cart).

It's that time of year again - the 8 month wait is over!! The HOKIES are back in action this Sat. The town is slowing transforming itself and the football chatter is getting louder and louder :)
